The Fantastic World of Frantisek Vlácil at Pacific Cinémathèque

While his name isn’t as well-known to westerners as those of Miloš Forman and Jirí Menzel, the late František Vlácil was even more crucial to the birth of modern Czech cinema. So it's a good thing Pacific Cinémathèque is bringing us The Fantastic World of František Vlácil. This 12-film retrospective runs from Friday (July 1) to July 13 and delivers everything from his incantatory, New Wave-ish debut film, The White Dove, to the brutal medieval epic Markéta Lazerová (starring Magda Vášáryová, shown here). Not to be missed.
