Fifty Shades of Grey outsells Harry Potter in Britain
On Amazon.co.uk, the buzz has worn off for J.K. Rowling as fans turn to best-selling erotica novel Fifty Shades of Grey for a dose of escapism. On Wednesday, E.L. James’s steamy tale of bondage and domination outsold all seven of Rowling’s books of magic and adventure in a British boarding school.
In case you haven’t heard, Fifty Shades of Grey tells the story of an innocent and naïve literature student named Anastasia Steele who begins a sadomasochistic affair with billionaire Christian Grey. Something of a phenomenon, the book has topped the literature lists since it was originally published in paperback format in 2011 by Vintage Books.
In a statement, EU director of Kindle Gordon Willoughby said that “if J.K. Rowling was the literary phenomenon of the last decade then E.L. James looks certain to take that mantle in the current decade. In just four months, E.L. James has become Amazon.co.uk's biggest-selling author of all time which is truly remarkable when you consider that we've been selling books for almost 14 years.”
Given the success of both authors, it seems to be only a matter of time until we see a Harry Potter/Fifty Shades of Grey mashup novel. Although I don’t know if I’m quite ready to see Harry and the gang get their rocks off like that.
