A major Japanese clothing retailer may be opening in Vancouver in the near future. According to online Canadian retail and fashion news website Retail Insider, Uniqlo is negotiating a lease on space inside The Bay downtown (674 Granville Street). The shop would reportedly be located directly below Vancouver’s newly opened Topshop Topman store.

Uniqulo was founded in 1949 and manufactures men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing and accessories. The clothing brand has more than 700 stores in Japan, and international locations in China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, South Korea, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The Vancouver store would be the first Uniqlo location in Canada.

Did their government give the company some of the Tsunami Aid money to expand? They've already admitted and apologized for using it for many things unassociated with the Earthquake and Tsunami, like business loans and grants, instead of improving life and infrastructure for all of the victims and townships. When the extent of it is known this will come back to haunt them i think.

      Hey Marilyn,

I doubt it will. People forget/dont care. Its just facts of life. Whats important now is that I can purchase socks in like 5 different shades of grey for like 15 dollars. And these are good quality socks! not like walmart BS.

Everyone loved Uniqlo when I lived in Japan - especially the fleeces. And while I don't recall buying anything there myself, I know that I *still* own items of clothing that I bought in Japan, over ten years ago, that are still in great shape (tho' not all fit me anymore...!). The "myth" of Japanese quality is actually no myth, in my experience...

This is awesome if it's really true... Uniqlo is good quality and cheap like Joe Fresh but being a little more on the fresh side.

Marilyn - you should reread the news item you saw again. The story is about misallocation of funds from a government supplimentary budget, not tsunami aid funds.

      Is a fairly detailed report.
Kind of odd to try to link Uniqlo to this.

I went to Uniqlo in Japan and found it pretty demoralizing--I tried on pants and couldn't get the largest size over my North American hips. I'm guessing they're going to size up for this market....

Even their normal jeans are of the highest quality. They also carry selvedge denim. I purchased 2 pairs in 2007 and they looked new for four years.
