If you missed the chance to see Anita at the Vancouver Jewish Film Festival or La Mitad del Mundo (The Half of the World) at the Vancouver Latin American Film Festival last year, there will be a chance to catch both of these movies in April.

A special screening of Anita will take place at Oakridge Cinemas (601-650 West 41st Avenue) on Thursday (April 14) at 7 p.m. The Argentinean movie was the most popular screening at last year's VJFF, and Thursday night's screening will help raise funds for both the 2011 festival and the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver's Festival Ha'Rikud, an annual dance festival.

Anita follows a young woman named Anita (Alejandra Manzo) and her mother (Norma Aleandro) whose seemingly simple lives in Buenos Aries become disrupted by the bombing of the Jewish Agency Offices. The movie was written and directed by Marcos Carnevale (Touch the Sky) and is shown in Spanish with English subtitles. Anita has won several international awards, including Best Film Audience Award at the Pittsburg Jewish Film Festival and Best Supporting Actress from the Argentinean Film Academy for Leonor Manso's performance. Advanced tickets ($13) for the screening can be purchased at the Jewish Community Centre front desk. Tickets will also be available at the door for $15 ($13 with valid VJFF membership card).

The screening of La Mitad del Mundo will take place at Pacific Cinémathí¨que (1131 Howe Street) on April 19 at 8 p.m. The film is presented as part of the Best of VLAFF series, which features some of the most popular movies screened during last year's festival.

La Mitad del Mundo is the first feature film by Mexican writer and director Jaime Ruiz Ibáñez. The dark comedy centres around a mentally-challenged boy named Mingo (Hansel Ramírez) whose sexual awakening brings a town's morality into question. La Mitad del Mundo has been nominated for Best First Film and Best Actor at the 2011 Ariel Awards (Mexican Academy of Film Awards).

Tickets for the screening of La Mitad del Mundo are $10 and can be purchased online ahead of time or at the screening.
