Four B.C. chefs to compete on Top Chef Canada Season 2

    1 of 1 2 of 1

Since Top Chef Canada premiered last April, it has become the highest-rated series on Food Network Canada (sorry Gordon, Guy, and Jamie). So it’s no surprise that the TV network has renewed the competition-style cooking show, which pits Canadian chefs against one another for a $100,000 prize and the title of “Top Chef”.

Top Chef Canada Season 2 starts March 12, and with a new season comes a new host—Canadian actor Lisa Ray—and 16 new competitors hailing from across the country.

This season, four of the 16 chefs are from B.C.

Trevor Bird, whose hometown is Montreal, is the sole competitor from Vancouver. The 28-year-old chef previously worked at Vancouver’s Shangri-La Hotel, and at Truffert and Restaurant Garcon in Montreal. Bird currently runs his own catering business called Trevor Bird Cooking and is in the process of opening his own restaurant.

Bird’s competitor, Jimmy Stewart, is a 23-year-old chef from Whistler. He grew up in North Vancouver and has cooked alongside Top Chef Canada Season 1 winner Dale MacKay at Lumiere and DB Bistro Moderne, Stewart is currently the sous chef at Whistler’s Bearfoot Bistro.

Kunal Ghose is the third competitor from B.C., hailing from Victoria, where he was raised and currently resides. Ghose, who is 39, is the chef and co-creator of Redfish Bluefish, a gourmet, local and sustainable fish shack in Victoria’s inner harbor. Ghose’s Bengali, Scottish, Greek, and Chilean background plays a large influence on his creative cooking.

Finally, Tofino’s Joel Aubie, who is currently the head chef at Shelter Restaurant, will compete on the second season. Aubie, who was born and raised in Bathurst, New Brunswick, relocated to Tofino to pursue his two loves: surfing and cooking. The 27-year-old chef has worked in kitchens across the country, including Tofino’s Wickaninnish Inn.

Visit the Food Network Canada website for a complete list of competitors.

Good luck to all the competing chefs, especially the ones from B.C.! Of course, as a resident of Victoria, I shall be rooting for Kunal Ghose! Top Chef is an inspiring show and I look forward to the new season.

Now this is good restaurant reporting - unlike the advertorials that spewed chunks across my screen on lousy suburban vegan restaurants.
