The Georgia Straight presents the Black Keys at Deer Lake Park
The Georgia Straight will be presenting a couple of unassuming white boys out of Ohio—better known to all of you as blues-rockers the Black Keys—at Deer Lake Park on June 27.
Long before they were picking up the Grammy for the best alternative album with Brothers, they were on our radar, headlining the Georgia Straight's first Straight Series concert back in 2008.
This time around the duo—vocalist-guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney—will be kicking off a Canadian tour with their Vancouver show, in support of that award-winning album (which we can't get enough of around here). Hope you were wise enough to listen to our sound advice when we told you all about the top albums of the year.
Tickets for the Black Keys, and openers Cage the Elephant, are priced at $45 (plus service fees) and go on sale Saturday (February 26), 10 a.m., at Live Nation, but Straight.com readers can take advantage of our presale, which takes place this Friday (February 25) from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., by going here.
If you're as psyched about this one as we are, and want to know how you can win a pair of tickets to the Live Nation show before they go on sale, create an account or sign in with the Straight and leave us a comment below, telling us why the Black Keys rock your world.
Don't forget to become a fan of the Georgia Straight on Facebook and sign up for THE LIST newsletter for more concert announcements, contests, and exclusive “beat the lines” presale passwords.
Thank you all for your fantastic responses, but the contest is now closed. Of course there can only be one winner and drum roll please.... Congrats Jessie-Mae!

Now give me some tickets, please.
inside there was little candy for nourishment
or firecrackers for amusement
every time a birthday was announced
the other pinatas full of sweets and explosions were
picked instead of mine
left dangling from a dusty beam
my soul hung in disrepair
chewing on the rapper of a tootsie roll
from a small stereo by the window
where sunshine would flaunt
came the title track to the Black Key's album Thickfreakness
which surrounded the pinata
applied a pressure, a stirring, a movement
not felt by my soul in years
the heart of my soul
skewered by the acute needled adrenaline of Dan and Pats
finely crafted riffs and rhythms
pressed itself against the confines of its cage
an implosion of freedom
and my soul returned to me
and I was able to stop
writing such
whiny
trite
baloney.
I would love to surprise him with these tickets!!!
pretty please
Black Keys - very nice indeed.
Baby I'm howlin' for tickets from you!!
I love how The Straight has to remind all of us that they're at the absolute avant garde of discovering music. Oh yeah? I first heard these guys when they used to jam in the garage next door! Give me a break.
If that's not good enough... how about my dog just died?
I would love to win some tickets, but even if I don't, I'll still be attending the concert. Black Keys rocks!! See you all there!
Please take this as a respectful and formal appeal and make it happen for me, I beg of you, oh Mighty Georgia Straight Gods. As an ode to a song by the band in question and to a poem which echoes its title, I leave you now with the angst-ridden words of Mister Allen Ginsburg. Thank you.
"I'm with you in Rockland
where we wake up electrified out of the coma by our own souls' airplanes roaring over the roof they've come to drop angelic bombs the hospital illuminates itself imaginary walls collapse O skinny legions run outside O starry-spangled shock of mercy the eternal war is here O victory forget your underwear we're free
I'm with you in Rockland
in my dreams you walk dripping from a sea-journey on the highway across America in tears to the door of my cottage in the Western night."
