The Georgia Straight proudly sponsors Early Music Vancouver’s presentation of G.F. Handel’s Orlando

The centerpiece to this year’s Vancouver Early Music Festival is an opera-in-concert performance of G.F. Handel’s Orlando at UBC’s Chan Centre for the Performing Arts (6265 Crescent Road) on Wednesday (August 15) starting at 7:30 p.m.

The concert will feature Vancouver’s Pacific Baroque Orchestra, with music direction by Alexander Weimann. Soloists include countertenor Owen Willetts as Orlando, soprano Karina Gauvin as Angelica, mezzo-soprano Allyson McHardy as Medoro, soprano Amanda Forsythe as Dorinda, and bass Nathan Berg as Zoroastro.

Orlando was first performed in 1733 and is based on the Renaissance epic poem Orlando furioso written by Ludovico Ariosto. Handal’s Italian opera tells the tale of unrequited love.

Tickets for Orlando are $32 to $63 and are available online, by phone at 1-855-985-2787, or through the Chan Centre box office.
