Music on Main presents the Modulus Festival from September 27 to 30 at the Heritage Hall (3102 Main Street) and Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre (181 Roundhouse Mews). The four-day festival showcases local and international musicians and composers in fun, intimate settings, allowing audiences to rediscover classic pieces and listen to new ones.

This year’s festival highlights include the Arcade Fire’s Richard Reed Perry, Los Angeles-based Calder Quartet, world premieres from the UK’s Michael Finnissy and Vancouver’s Jocelyn Morlock, and performances by some of Vancouver’s most exciting musicians.

Modulus Festival kicks off with an opening night showcase at Heritage Hall starting at 8 p.m. Music includes Richard Reed Parry’s For Heart and Breath, Michael Finnissy’s Mercy and Mankind and Sesto Libro di Gesualdo, and Messiaen’s Visions de L’Amen. The following night, the Calder Quartet will play new music by Andy Akiho, Henryk Górecki’s Quasi una fantasia (String Quartet No. 2), and Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 6 in F Minor starting at 8 p.m. at Heritage Hall. This will be followed by a performance by Souns and Mei Han at 10:30 p.m. On September 29, Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho will lead the Music on Main All-Star Band at Heritage Hall at 8 p.m., and on September 30, audiences can take in a performance of Richard Reed Parry’s Drones/Revelations at the Roundhouse at 3 p.m.

Tickets to individual concerts at the Modulus Festival are $35 and $15 for students. A festival pass ($99/$49) includes admission to all concerts.
