Explore the depths of our oceans through films at the third-annual Vancouver Festival of Ocean Films, happening at Vancity Theatre (1181 Seymour Street) Friday and Saturday (June 8 to 9).

This year, 10 films from Canada, Ireland, Spain, and the U.S., will be screened with the purpose of raising interest and awareness about oceans, as well as raising funds for ocean conservation. Partial proceeds from the festival will support the Georgia Strait Alliance, a citizens’ group working to protect and restore the marine environment and promote sustainability of the Georgia Strait.

On Friday, Ice Bears of the Beaufort, a 57-minute film about polar bears in Alaska, will be shown at 7 p.m. Fish Meat, Joe Cunnigham’s short film exploring fish farms, will begin at 8 p.m., and Paddle to Seattle: Journey Through the Inside Passage, a 56-minute film about two friends who build their own kayaks and paddle together for 97 days, starts at 8:45 p.m.

On Saturday, The Ultimate Wave Tahiti, which feature surfing champion Kelly Slater, will be screened at 2 p.m. At 2:45 p.m., Light Screen, Spanish director Carlos Virgili Ribe’s short film that explores underwater photography, will be shown. I Just Love to Paddle, based in Hawaii, begins at 3:20 p.m., and This is your Ocean: Sharks starts at 4 p.m.

On Saturday night, The Polar Explorer, Canadian filmmaker Mark Terry’s 52-minute film that presents a scientific profile of our changing polar regions, will be shown at 7 p.m. The Pipe Dreams Project, another Canadian film by Ryan Vandecasteyen and Faroe Des Roches, takes a look at the controversial Enbridge pipeline, starting at 7:55 p.m. At 8:30 p.m., The Pipe, which looks at gas pipelines in Ireland, will be screened.

Tickets are $15 when purchased in advance online and $18 at the door.

Hey, I've met that polar bear!

My film, ICE BEARS OF THE BEAUFORT, is opening the festival on Friday. Meantime, you can watch the trailer and see more pics on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Ice-Bears-of-the-Beaufort/200496200072965.

You can also connect with me on Twitter @PolarArt. What's it like filming polar bears in the Alaskan arctic? Funny you should ask...

Thanks to the Georgia Strait Alliance and all of the sponsors of this year's Vancouver Festival of Ocean Films. A special thanks to Maple Bay Marina (http://www.maplebaymarina.com/), sponsor of the Friday night screenings.
