Goodbye Paul Stirfry; Sunset Burgers brings 1980s So-Cal style to Yaletown
And just like that, another one bites the dust—although I'm not sure if I'm all that sad about not having had tried this one.
Paul Stirfry Chopstick House (550 Nelson Street), which served "Southeast Asian street food", has closed after only been open for a few months. I don't believe that the dishes, which included satay skewers and wok-fried noodles, were as authentic as they were "fusion". While Yaletown doesn't really have any fast and casual noodle spots, except for The Noodle Box (839 Homer Street), which quietly opened a second Vancouver location recently, Paul Stirfy never really seemed all that busy.
Now, a new restaurant is opening in its spot, and it looks like it stepped right out of an '80s California-based sitcom. The owners of Sunset Burgers (550 Nelson Street) call the restaurant a "California-style burger joint" on its Facebook page (its website hasn't launched yet), and it's scheduled to open sometime in September.
If the neon pink and blue signage is any indication, Sunset plans on serving classic American burgers with sides such as fries, onion rings, and mac n' cheese. The burgers are all priced between $5.49 for the Original Sunset Burger, to $7.59 for the double patty burger and chicken burger. While these prices seem fairly low compared to other nearby burger joints, such as StackHouse Burger Bar (1224 Granville Street), keep in mind that the toppings only include the basics (lettuce, tomato, onions, Sunset sauce, mustard, and pickles), and some other toppings, including cheese, guacamole, and jalapeno peppers, cost extra (between 49 cents and $1.29).
Prices for the sides also seem fair: $3.29 for hand-cut fries, $4.29 for onion rings, and $4.89 for the mac n' cheese. Sunset Burgers will also have poutine on the menu, at $5.89; although with Dunn's Famous (827 Seymour Street) opening just a few blocks away around the same time, you might want to try the more authentic, straight-out-of-Quebec version first.
