Google Music is fucking with explicit songs

God bless cloud-based storage systems, for no other reason than, when you’re kicking back on the sunsplashed shores of Barbados and suddenly get a burning desire to limbo to Buster Poindexter’s “Hot Hot Hot” you suddenly have options. Options that weren’t available to your grandparents back when 8-track cassettes were considered cutting-edge technology.

The problem? That would be when storage systems start monkeying with songs that end up sounding more fit for family consumption than an artist has intended. Google users have discovered this when using the tech giant’s scan and match cloud program.

The free service lets users scan their home music catalogues for future online access. Google will often match songs to the 13 million ones it has stored in its servers.

The problem is that Google Music sometimes replaces explicit-lyrics tracks with radio-edit versions. Users are reporting cases of accessing songs like Cee Lo Green’s “Fuck You” via remote, and getting the clean edition of the song.

What does all this mean for you? Well, if you feel the need to punch Alcoholic White Trash’s “I Shit My Cunt” into your Google Music cloud the next time you find yourself in Paris, France, prepare to be disappointed by a sanitized edit. The same likely goes if you're expecting the filthy versions of the Subhuman’s “Slave to My Dick”, Martha Wainwright’s ““Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole”, and Superchunk’s “Slack Motherfucker”.

The most indecent lyrics would have to be from pseudo-songs such as the Ballad of the Green Beret brought to you by Staff Sgt Barry Sadler and the U.S. military. It soiled the airwaves with massive airplay during the Vietnam war- and served as pro-war propaganda. I doubt Google will sanitize it though.
