Gulf of Mexico oil spill, if it happened in Vancouver

    1 of 1 2 of 1

      Having a hard time putting the extent of the Deepwater Horizon disaster into perspective? Visit www.beowulfe.com/oil/, where Andy Linter has used Google Maps to replicate the oil spill, based on satellite imagery.

      If the spill was centred in Vancouver, it would stretch from the middle of Vancouver Island to Highway 1 just south of Lytton. Almost all of Garibaldi and Golden Ears Provincial Parks would be covered, as would all of Interstate 5 north of Mt. Vernon in Washington State.

      According to the map, Port Moody is safe—but for how long?

      Really? So oil floats uphill? I think you've forgotten a key item.. topography.

      Hmm I think the article just means to show the sheer expanse of the spill in distance, not necessarily a literal "what if it happened here" scenario.

      @Bill

      Yeah, I think this mapping thing would be better if it could shift the shape to fit the location. Inland wouldn't work, but like fitting it into the Georgia Straight and coastal areas would be much more convincing.

      If they really wanted to make a point they should take one of the sites where they might drill for oil off the BC coast and show us what impact a spill would have.

      Has anyone see this? It is two farmers from the south using hay to clean up oil. Surely the big wigs have seen this, anyone trying it? http://www.wimp.com/solutionoil/

      Now that I can live with drilling in outer space maybe the moon, yeah lets send off shore drillers to the moon. These guys can't be human as I swear they have oil pumping throught their viens and when I see the total devistation that is done when a spill does occur because of human error I wonder what are the gaurantees, there are none. And to err is human but this mess you have be some kinda alien to create the devastation the leak has caused on the Gulf.
