Happy hour deal: $10 moules frites and beer at the Sandbar on Granville Island

    1 of 1 2 of 1

When your wallet is feeling sad and its sole twenty is lonely, take heart. There are dining deals out there.

Case in point: the moules frites at the Sandbar seafood restaurant on Granville Island.

This promotion has been going on for months, and I keep thinking it’s got to end soon because it’s such a good deal. But I just called to confirm, and it’s still going strong. From Monday to Friday, between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., in the lounge only (not the restaurant proper or the patio), you can order a bowl of mussels, fries, and a pint of Granville Island beer for just $10. Really, find me a better deal than that.

For the bevie, you can choose from lager, honey lager, or the Hefeweizen shown here. The mussels also come in three varieties: Thai Curry, Vindaloo, or Provencal.

I’ve gone for this deal three times or so, and enjoyed it every time. But to be honest, the mussels have invariably been completely overcooked, and the sauces neither here nor there. However, the beer’s cold, and the fries are yummy. Plus, I like eating the mussels from the cute little bucket. The atmosphere’s upbeat, and you don’t part with much more than $10 (add HST and tip, of course).

      Deal.

Got hungry after I wrote this and happened to be at Granville Island, so I tried this deal again. Must report that this time the mussels weren't overcooked, and the tomato Provencal sauce was actually quite nice, with little sausage coins (I think chorizo).

What?! Aren't people dropping five hundred bucks on teaspoon sized entrees at Lumiere facsimile restuarants in Vancouver anymore?
      Hah!

Have been there. You think this is a huge bucket of mussels. In reality it was a saucer of mediocre mussels on top of a big empty bucket! Go for the beer if you must, but a bargain this is not!!! And shame on Georgia Straight for not giving the "straight" goods on the offer.

Good for Louise. She's absolutely right!

Sure, Louise, it's a bowl set into the bucket, but it's hardly a saucer. I thought it was a fair amount of mussels, and my companions were all satisfied: nobody left hungry. They're certainly not the best mussels in town, but they're still a good deal.
