HBO “deeply dismayed” by use of George W. Bush’s severed head in Game of Thrones
Unbeknownst to this Game of Thrones fanatic, a scene in the popular HBO epic-fantasy series prominently features the severed head of the 43rd president of the United States.
In the first-season DVD commentary, creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss note that “George Bush’s head appears in a couple of beheading scenes. It's not a choice, it’s not a political statement. We just had to use whatever heads we had lying around.”
While it sounds plausible, I don’t think I quite believe them. Don’t get me wrong, I fully support their use of George W. Bush’s severed head as a grisly prop, but I’m sure they had other heads available.
A statement released by HBO reads “We were deeply dismayed to see this and find it unacceptable, disrespectful and in very bad taste. We made this clear to the executive producers of the series who apologized immediately for this inadvertent careless mistake. We are sorry this happened and will have it removed from any future DVD production."
In other words, kids, keep your copies of Game of Thrones on hand if you want to relive this moment over and over again. I know I will.
