Heart boxed set sparks memories of a Coliseum concert (Chilliwack, not Vancouver)

Over the years I've heard quite a few folks fondly reminisce about seeing Heart play their high-school gym out in Buttfuck, B.C., back in the year of our lord, 1976. That was the same year that the Ann and Nancy Wilson-led band released its debut album, Dreamboat Annie, which has to be one of the best Vancouver-made albums ever. Guitar-heavy tunes like "Magic Man", "Crazy On You", and "White Lighting & Wine" haven't lost one iota of their rockingness over the decades, in my unhumble opinion.

I never got to see Heart at my high school, Chilliwack Senior Secondary--although I did see the Stampeders there, and they were pretty cool, what with "Sweet City Woman" and all. For Heart we actually had to swig our lemon gin in the shadows beyond the doors of the Chilliwack Coliseum, the same hockey rink where days before I might have crosschecked somebody's helmet clear off--or gotten pounded into submission for just that type of cheeky play. I remember standing in front of the stage fairly entranced by the Les Paul wizardry of lead guitarist Roger Fisher. Or maybe I was entranced by the ravishing beauty of Nancy Wilson. Coulda been both I 'spose.

At any rate, I was crazy on that band, and stayed that way up until around the Dog and Butterly album of '78. They lost me in the eighties with all those overwrought AOR hits that started clogging the airwaves, but I never gave up on the early stuff, which is why I was psyched to see a copy of the new boxed set, Strange Euphoria, show up in the mail today.

First thing I did was skip to track 9 on the first disc, a previously unreleased version of "White Lightning & Wine" recorded live at the Aquarius Tavern in Seattle on June 1, 1976. All that beautiful old Heartiness came floating back, driven by the beat of Michael DeRosier's trusty cowbell. That tune is followed by a stellar version of another barnburner, "Barracuda", recorded live at L.A.'s Universal Amphitheatre a year later.

Apart from previously unreleased live tracks, the three-CD Strange Euphoria set includes a ton of demo tracks for the hardcore Heart fan, plus a DVD of a 1976 KWSU-TV broadcast for all those--like myself--who'd never agree that just one version of "White Lightning & Wine" is nearly enough.

I seem to recall Heart playing Chilliwack's Evergreen Hall in the late 70's, back when they were doing at least a set of Led Zep. Nancy was well on her way to becoming a terrific musician but it was Roger Fisher's show guitar-wise. I wonder how many people who admire Ann's vocals recognize the Robert Plant influence? I always loved the sister's harmonies and consider Dreamboat Annie to be one of the formative albums of my youth, sending me down the road (up the river?) to life as a singer/songwriter. I also wince at the subsequent ballad hell that Ann put us all through but when I remind myself that those crappy songs likely paid for their retirement years, I'm consoled (somewhat :) Love you Steve! Thanks for all you did to help launch Dog Skin Suit back in the day...your support was a huge part of our success in Vancouver at the time and we'll always be grateful to you (and the Georgia Straight) for that. Cheers!

I was at Universal with my family as the band was setting up on the theatre stage." Mom, Dad...there's this show I wanna see here tonight?!"
"Back in the truck and camper buddy, satisfy yourself with that Genesis Wind and Wuthering eight track you just bought."
April Wine and Heart together in Victoria was an amazing show though.

Did you hang on to that 8-track? Saw one (unopened and an Italian import, though) selling on the Net for $100. Rather surprising for such a crap format (not to mention for a formerly great band that was starting it's inevitable decline after Peter Gabriel left and the ham-handed Phil Collins picked up the reins).
And Wind and Wuthering was the last tour with the great Steve Hackett.

We came as close to A Dog Skin Suit reunion as possible on April 29th when we gathered up at Ryder Lake Hall to celebrate the life and musical times of local legend Red Hare...we were all there except Shawn Smith (who has fallen off the earth, evidently) so we were "One Dog Down" for a strangely compelling version of "Tears Of A Clown" complete with a rap by Mr. Green (aka Gerhard Regier). Wish you were there! You would have recognized most of the old rounders and hippies, I'm sure. Red's in hospice now, so our hearts are heavy but the memories of his incredible parties will never die...for a "Redtrospective" check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3epLSPDkr8. Glory days!

Hey Marty, no I don't know what happened to the tape but I do have a "22 explosive hits" 8 track I display on a kitsch shelf.
Incidentally, I saw the Wind and Wuthering show at the Pacific Coliseum with Hackett in 76.
My first big show in Vancouver. They played at centre ice and tics were four dollars.
That show changed my life.
