Kid Carson tweets about his sweetheart being on the cover of the Georgia Straight

One of the city's best-known deejays, Kid Carson, has let his 44,738 Twitter followers know that his beloved is on the cover of this week's Georgia Straight.

"My girlfriend.... It's not Penthouse... But it's still a cover! ;)" quipped Carson, who can be heard on Sonic 104.9 FM.

Personal trainer and bodybuilding.com athlete Hanan Arabatlian is, indeed, Carson's partner.

His comment has prompted some amusing reactions on his Facebook page.

"At a glance, I thought it was Jennifer Love Hewitt but she's got a way better bod than JLH!" wrote Jocelyn Schonekess.

A disapproving Diana Edward Nelson declared: "Why the excuse for not being Penthouse? You really wouldn't want her to pose in that magazine, would you? I would hope not!"

Kim Corkery wisely stated that the Straight is "much classier than Penthouse".

Cathy Cena told Carson that he "should be proud".

And Amrit Grewal told Carson that he has a "pretty hot girlfriend".

Just in case anyone thought Carson was serious, he added this message: "Oh god people I was joking about Penthouse! Haha"

guess what?
It looks like The Straight is kind of becoming somewhat mainstream with a cover like this, wouldn't something more "alternative/progressive" be more suitable as a front page cover for a "alternative/progressive" paper.
Guess no more riots like the old days, right Dan?

Well the Straight goes through phases. I remember it when it was exclusively about Hollywood stars, that was the 80s.

I see what you're saying, you'd like the Straight to advertise itself with a bit more substance. But me, I can tolerate a cover with a picture of a cancerous fish on it about one in ten weeks. I have no problem with the Straight trying to make money by getting people to pick up a cover with an amazingly fit person on it. I mean, look what they put in the back five pages! And it is all to the good, bringing interesting often progressive political views to the fore, and also being able to pay for this quite spiffy new web design.

In the same issue, we had an article about the Deep Green Resistance Movement, which is talking about sabotage to stop an environmental catastrophe from unfolding. That's alternative.

The cover story raised the issue of GMO food.

guess what?
Ya sure Charlie, why then wasn't the Deep Green Resistance Movement on the front page ? I know that's not as sexy as having Kid Carson's girlfriend on the cover, oh well, at least your papers free & the cover you have brings a cheap thrill to some guys out there.

Charlie!

I'd eat that woman at the drop of a hat, but please don't disrespect her with the "food" moniker.

That is what you were talking about, innit?

Oh, never mind.

I'm going to defend the cover story, even though it's going to get me pilloried by the cynics. You can read it here:

http://www.straight.com/life/fighting-fat-requires-finding-right-carbohy...

I learned a great deal about nutrition when I interviewed Hanan Arabatlian.

For the same article, Toronto naturopath Natasha Turner taught me about how insulin resistance contributes to serious health problems. I recommend her latest book, The Carb Sensitivity Program, which is loaded with interesting, peer-reviewed research on how carbohydrates are absorbed into the body.

I spoke to Dai Manuel, who was a morbidly obese teenager before discovering how proper nutrition could help him become a competitive CrossFit athlete.

Ron Zalko explained to me how kale is a superfood and, as a result, I've added it to my diet.

Hanan Arabatlian was happy to be on the cover of our paper and I was happy to be able to play a role in making this happen.

And for those who don't care about nutrition, the very first article in the paper was about Deep Green Resistance, which had gotten no coverage anywhere else in this region as far as I could tell.

Okay, now it's the commenters' turn to explain why I'm out to lunch:)

Charlie, I agree with you that the article was good but how does any of that explain why they had to have generically attractive tan and tits on the cover instead of something with actual substance?

Here's another reason for putting Hanan Arabatlian on the cover. She was born in Syria. Syrians are feeling pretty terrible about what's happening to their country. Have you considered the possibility that having a successful local Syrian Canadian on the cover just might have boosted the morale of other Vancouver-area residents from Syria at this time?

It wasn't the sole reason for putting her on the cover. But it was something that crossed my mind during our deliberations.

I'm really enjoying watching you jump through hoops to justify The Straight using a bad pic on their cover to illustrate your article Charlie. Once again, that's a perfectly fine reason to have her on the cover, but it still doesn't explain why, to illustrate an article about fitness the picture used on the cover twists Ms. Arabatlian's body in such a way that signs of her physical fitness are minimized (where are her biceps? why not show off her six pack?) and instead emphasizes her as a sex object. She's not even wearing a sports bra!

Who the fuck is Kid Carson? Who the fuck is Charlie Smith? Is this one of those "Housewives of Vancouver" covers?

Massive fail abides. I'm throwing up in my mouth...

And so
I am not sure why it is that this particular article was even written. Someone's twitter page is not exactly newsworthy. However I really like Kid Carson and his lovely girlfriend deserve the attention.

I also enjoy reading your articles Charlie.
Thanks.
