Telefilm Canada has announced that Kim Nguyen's War Witch (Rebelle) has been chosen as Canada's official submission for the best foreign language film award at the 85th Academy Awards.

The dramatic feature follows the story of a pregnant 14-year-old girl who was abducted by a rebel army at the age of 12. It was written and directed by Nguyen and was shot in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The film was selected from 12 films submitted to the pan-Canadian Oscar selection committee chaired by Telefilm Canada.

Canada has received Oscar nominations in this category for Monsieur Lazhar, Incendies, In Darkness, and Water.

The Barbarian Invasions (Les Invasions barbares) won the award in 2003.

Sixty-five countries will each submit one film for consideration. The nominations for the 85th Academy Awards will be announced on January 15, 2013.
