Kitsilano contest calls for stories from residents

Four Kitsilano neighbourhood and business associations have launched a contest for Kitsilano residents past and present. The “Kits Me… Love the ‘Hood You’re In!” contest is asking for story submissions from Kitsilano residents about why they love the neighbourhood. Selected stories will be chosen for 90 street banners along West 4th Avenue between Burrard and Balsam Streets, with each banner displaying the story, illustrations, and a picture of the Kitsilano resident.

“It’s seemed like a great way of inviting people to express what they love about this area,” Julie Rieter, Kitsilano Neighbourhood House fun developer, said in a news release. “It’s a celebration of Kits pure and simple.”

The “Kits Me… Love the ‘Hood You’re In!” contest was inspired by a T-shirt that read “I Heart My Hood”, which Rieter spotted at last summer’s Khatsahlano! Music and Art Festival, and it’s a joint effort between the Kitsilano Neighbourhood House, Kitsilano 4th Avenue Business Improvement Association, Kitsilano Chamber of Commerce, and the West Broadway Business Improvement Association.

Stories can be submitted online or dropped off at the Kitsilano Neighbourhood House office (3683 West 4th Avenue) up until April 5. The installment of banners is expected to begin in June.
