Kristi Miller named Scientist of the Year

The headline is a jest. “Muzzled” DFO scientist Kristi Miller has not been named for any such thing and she’s not on the cover of Time magazine—at least not yet.

But that hasn’t stopped the indefatigable biologist from Sointula, Alexandra Morton, from holding up a copy of the faux mock-up at the downtown courts where the Cohen commission hearings are taking place.

According to a Salmon Are Sacred news release sent this morning (August 24), the “Wild Salmon People” are gathering in support of Miller, who appears on the stand today at the commission’s evidentiary hearings on diseases.

“Dr. Kristi Miller’s research is the first solid clue we have on why the Fraser sockeye declined for 18 years, ” Morton, cofounder of Salmon Are Sacred, said in the release. “The government of Canada has no right to muzzle this work, Miller has to be allowed to figure out what disease these fish are fighting and is coming from salmon farms. Up to 95% pre-spawning mortality in Fraser sockeye cannot be hidden any longer. Our salmon are dying of politics.”
