Neil Young and Crazy Horse take the Psychedelic Pill

Rolling Stone has revealed that the next Neil Young and Crazy Horse album—their second this year—will be called Psychedelic Pill. In contrast to Americana, an album of folk standards ( sort of) that the band released in June, Psychedelic Pill will feature a bunch of Young originals, and, reportedly, the endless, beefy jams he usually lays down with the Horse (yay!)

Guitarist Frank "Poncho" Sampedro told RS that the title track began with Young playing some chords on the piano. "Ralph [Molina] was on drums and he started this beat on the snare and wouldn't stop for nearly an hour. We stood up and played it and realized it was a great song,” he said.

The album is slated for release in October, meaning we should be peaking on the Psychedelic Pill when the band arrives at Rogers Arena on November 11.

In the same interview, Sampedro reveals the painfully protracted (some might say insane) negotiating that went into their setlist for a tour that began in Albuquerque on August 3. After fiddling with the song choices right up until the first show, Young hit the stage and promptly started playing “Mr. Soul”—which they hadn’t practiced. What a fuckin’ nut.

Am I alone in my lack of excitement here? I rushed out and bought me tix for Neil because I was totally excited to hear Americana - which I LOVE - bein' played live. And now it turns out there'll be ANOTHER album that they're touring? Of... originals...? Because, uhh, I haven't been so impressed with Neil's originals lately, actually (Fork in the Road and Living With War both have some pretty weak stuff on them, and... anyone remember Crazy Horse's LAST album of originals? Yerks!). I was kinda thinking it was a GOOD IDEA that ol'Shakey give songwriting a break until he got his mojo back (no shame in it, especially with covers as inspired and awesome as those on Americana). So suddenly I'm worried indeed about what this album is going to do to my Precious! Experience! of seeing Crazy Horse live... what if the Psychedelic Pill is a bum trip? No "woo hoo's" for me.

Aw, come on, some of Neil's songwriting lately sounds like he wrote the songs in the shower...
