      B.C. property values rise  BC Assessment has announced a 2.3 percent increase in the total value of real estate in 2012 from the previous year. The number of properties on the assessment roll rose by 0.92 percent. 

      Norovirus at Royal Columbian Hospital  Two wards are under quarantine at the New Westminster tertiary-care hospital after 18 patients and staff were struck with Norovirus, a gastrointestinal illness that causes vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, and fever. 

      Suspected Burnaby rapist arrested  CKNW Radio has reported that Burnaby RCMP have arrested a man who allegedly sexually assaulted two women over the weekend. He faces two counts of sexual assault and breach of probation.

      Idle No More protest planned  From 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., Idle No More demonstrators will be at Waterfront Station in Vancouver to press their demands for more justice for aboriginal people.

      Fiscal cliff averted  Stock prices have soared after the U.S. House of Representatives voted in favour of a Senate bill to maintain unemployment benefits and retain most Bush-era tax cuts.

      Syrian death toll tops 60,000  The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillayhas, has estimated that more than 60,000 people have died in Syria as a result of that country's civil war.

      Canada will face U.S. juniors  Team USA defeated the Czech Republic 7-0 to reach the semifinal against Canada in the World Junior Hockey Championship. They'll play on Thursday (January 3) at 12:30 a.m. Pacific Standard Time.

      Oscar voting extended  The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has extended the voting deadline for Oscar nominees by 24 hours because of computer problems.
