I don't know what (if any) discussions occurred between BC and Alberta before Ms Clark issued her 5-point manifesto. But my suspicion is: none.

Sadly, that's the road to hell in a political environment. Both premiers are now fully entrenched, politically, and there is no escape for either of them. No wonder the meeting was short and frosty.

But the saddest thing of all is that the federal government - the "third party" that might have a chance to bring the sides together and mediate an agreement - is the least capable federal government in decades to do such a thing. Harper wants Northern Gateway, but he has backed himself into a position where "brute force and ignorance" is his only option.

And, as "tone deaf" as he is on federalist and inter-provincial issues, even Harper knows that he can't force Northern Gateway on BC. If you think that Trudeau's National Energy Program provoked a crisis in Alberta, you ain't seen nothin' yet. B.C. will explode.

My conclusion is that we are looking at utter incompetence at every level, on this issue. Clark is a typical BC airhead. Redford is a typically myopic Albertan. And Harper is a spiritual crusader, who doesn't listen to anybody other than himself.

Disclaimer: I am opposed to Northern Gateway, because I don't want that crap on my coast.
