Did you notice the hazy cloud hanging over our fair city yesterday? Or maybe dozens of red-eyed pedestrians queued up for shawarmas and pizza?

If you didn't, you missed Vancouver's annual 420 marijuana rally. Thousands of pot enthusiasts and activists gathered at the Vancouver Art Gallery for one of the large smoke-ins in Canada. Here are some photos from the event.

It’s great to see people coming together to support and be active in their cause. Groups are organizing all over the country to speak their minds on reforming pot laws. I drew up a very cool poster for the cause which you can check out on my artist’s blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2011/01/vote-teapot-2011.html Drop in and let me know what you think!

Yeah ... these people are making a political point ... right. If there was anything political to be taken form this bunch, it was that there will be no shortage of welfare recipients for the forseeable future. Budget accordingly.

Thanks Bruno, we all appreciate your input. The rally had anti-Harper posters, and at many times took the opportunity to encourage young voters to get out and vote. I think that's in itself is worthwhile. Though so many of them were far too young to even be voting.....ha.

Now, I was just there photographing the crowd, but they were far more docile than any of the ruckus going down on Granville every weekend. But if your skewed views are accurate Bruno, I bet they'll be enjoying every one of your tax dollars.

@A. - Skewed as to GS readers perhaps but as to general Canadian population, not likely. As to the anti-Harper initiative (which I couldn't agree with any more, BTW), perhaps holding this rally after May 2 this year would have been a better idea as I'm sure the news footage of this rally pushed 10 voters to vote for Harper for every one that it will bring out against Captain Evangelical.

My name is Adam and I Had the honor of organizing the music and entertainment this year. To all the people looking down their nose at this, I have to tell you... This rally was a huge undertaking with 2 large stages and over 25 musical acts. The infrastructure alone was an undertaking... I smoke ganja every day and I get things done and i'm certainly not on welfare, nor are any of my crew. We are professionals in this city and we have no need to even prove that. It's recognized. Most of our crew helped made the olympics a success. We make all your concerts and events happen too. We work behind the scenes so well that you dont even notice us... but were there... and we love to burn weed. It's really about time to grow up and realize that santa is not real and marijuana users are more than red eyed dreadlock'd welfare hippies. We occupy your office buildings, banks and boards of directors, we design your street plans and your power grids and let's face it... Were responsible for the killer cash economy in vancouver dispute a rapid decline seemingly everywhere else. it's sheer ignorance to compare a heavy ganja user even to a drunk, let alone a junky, welfare recipient or any kind of implied second class citizen. Shame on you. get out into the world and experience real reality instead of just believing that we are the cardboard cut out archetypal stoner characters your used to seeing on your TV.

I love that this is possible here.. I was downtown (for work) and could exactly tell what time it is. @Emil: you should try some pot sometimes, it may loosen the stick in your lower back!

Please ignore these people who obviously have no idea what this rally is all about or who marijuana users are. We're not a stereotype. Most of us are highly functioning human beings. People who hate on pot smokers really don't have a clue. The music this year was absolutely AMAZING! Thank you for putting in so much hard work. Can't wait to see what's in store next time!
