If you asked Metro Vancouver residents how to get to the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary, most would say they'd never heard of it.

The sanctuary is located on Westham Island in Delta, and it's part of the Alaksen National Wildlife Area and Boundary Bay-Roberts Bank-Sturgeon Bank (Fraser River Estuary) Important Bird Area.

It's easily one of the best places to see birds in B.C.'s Lower Mainland.

This weekend, visitors to the sanctuary saw lesser snow geese preparing to fly north to Wrangel Island in Russia.

Other birds spotted in the Fraser River estuary marshes included the American coot, bald eagle, great blue heron, northern pintail, red-winged blackbird, and wood duck.
