The CBS affiliate in Miami has posted an article giving you yet another worry about those energy-efficient light bulbs.

Citing a six-month-old study by Stony Brook University researchers, the station mentioned that "compact fluorescent light bulbs emit high levels of ultra violet radiation".

These rays are "so strong that they can actually burn skin and skin cells".

That's not all. They can also cause melanoma, according to Dr. Rebecca Tung. Whoopie!

Governments like these bulbs because they use a third as much energy as incandescent bulbs.

B.C. has banned incandescent light bulbs to remain in line with federal regulations that took effect last year.

Their replacement, the compact fluorescent bulbs, include mercury, which can cause brain and kidney damage if they leak.

So if these bulbs break, you're supposed to air out the room for five to 10 minutes, get people and pets away from the area, and wear gloves when sweeping up the contents.

Make sure the remains are put in double bags before recycling. And do not vacuum the mercury!!!!

B.C. Conservative Leader John Cummins has criticized the B.C. Liberal government for banning the incandescent bulbs.

In light of the research from Stony Brook University, this issue could help his party win some votes in the May's provincial election.
