Time magazine story on extreme breast-feeding isn't new

You can bet that the latest cover of Time magazine is going to create some fodder for late-night comedians.

Jamie Lynne Grumet, 26, agreed to be photographed breast-feeding her son, who's nearly four years old.

According to Time, by the time an American child turns one, less than 25 percent are being breast-fed. The World Health Organization recommends breast-feeding up to a second birthday or beyond.

But there are those like Grumet, who are characterized as "extreme breast-feeders" because they continue for years after point.

This isn't the first time that a major U.S.-based media outlet has done a story on this topic. In 2009, ABC's 20/20 newsmagazine program interviewed a mother who breast-fed her six-year-old son.

"There are those women who do nurse that keep it under wraps because they're afraid of what others are going to say," she says. "They're closet nursers."

The kid likened the taste of breast milk to vanilla ice cream.

Exploitation be thy name
The creepiest thing about this cover is not the breast feeding. It's the sexualization of a controversial topic. They found the skinniest, blondest woman they could; it's got MILF written all over it and it's disgusting and exploitative. Whoever at Time decided to run that cover should be ashamed of themselves.

What's interesting is the implied sexuality of the cover (and perversely the sense of indecency of a young boy suckling on his mother's breast) which if we are to go by popular culture, has sexualized the breast as a phallic symbol whilst at the same time neglecting to realize that breasts actually exist for a biological reason- to provide milk for the rearing of the young.

Turning a personal child rearing decision on a polemic on aesthetics is merely pandering and an ingenuous attempt by Time to stir the boat....

Beautiful.
Breastfeeding should only stop once the child decides.
