Twitter backlash against Gordon Campbell receiving Order of B.C.

As soon as we saw that ex-preem Gordon Campbell, floor-crossing MP David Emerson, and lobbyist/bureaucrat Ken Dobell will be honoured with the Order of B.C., we knew there would be a lot of angry comments coming into our website.

But I never expected someone to create a campaign to reverse any of these decisions.

Perhaps it's a sign of the times, but there's now a Twitter account called "NoOrderForGordo".

One of the tweets came from journalist Bob Mackin, who pointed out that former Vanoc CEO John Furlong was among those who made this year's selections.

The provincial cabinet makes the choices each year based on the recommendations of a council, which is comprised of Chief Justice Lance Finch (chairperson), House Speaker Bill Barisoff, Union of B.C. Municipalities president and Surrey councillor Barbara Steele, Research Universities' Council of B.C. president Robin Ciceri, the deputy minister of the intergovernmental relations secretariat (there's an associate deputy now named Pierrette Maranda), and two past recipients of the Order of B.C.

It isn't even Campbell that is really getting to me. Sure, he's a corporate hack who sold out the Province in a backroom deal with one of the most lopsided federal/provincial contracts in a long while (HST), and sure he was caught drunk driving, and BC Rail's carcass still smells. IPP's have raped our rivers and the BCUC is in a state of disarray.

Fine. I can look past that. But Dobell and Emerson? The two sneakiest little behind the scenes sleaze servers in the entire politics industry.

A direct slap to the face of BC voters. No wonder Christy didn't want to go to an election. This announcement would have brought her and the Liberals demise on its own.

I think the Premier needs to intervene re: Dobell & Emerson. That's too much.

Sean Holman has earned his.

Alise Mills has earned hers.

Dave Texiara who is a big part of Pink Shirt Day (anti-bullying) and busting the clowns behind the Vancouver Riot has earned his.

Well, he did establish a new order in BC. Or at least reinforce the order of the haves having more and the have nots less. And his notion of Just Us was a new order. Perhaps that's why this nomination was put forward. It's nice to see that he's in there with others who share his sense of democracy - vote until you get it right.

First, read the criteria for determining who should receive the Order of BC. If any of these three deserve it based on ALL of the criteria, let us know.

What a slap in the face (again) for democracy!

Dobell, Emerson, & Campbell who the hell are they trying to kid. If those 3 qualify the title is meaningless.
Campbell might qualify as a former premier, if you can get around his politics, but Dobell & Emerson, give your head a shake.
Obviously these guys have brown nosed enough and the committe is brown nosing for something else.
How about giving this type of award to some of the SARs techs in B.C. or volunteer fire fighters and first responders or community workers or union leaders, teachers who made a differance or kids' sports coachs but those 3 do nothings, my god,.
what a joke.

G. Campbell does not deserve the Order of B.C. Too many marks against him. Who sets the criteria? Also, who votes on this?

I was just looking at the Straight's poll on Campbell deserving the award and out of 500 people only 9% believe he is deserving.
So 9% percent Campbell's popularity with the people stays true to itself as even after resigning people weren't soon to forget and this award isn't going to help but stir things up again like he never left. More history making stuff on the way is my guess.

Are you kidding! First Gordon Campbell escapes the mess he created in BC by being given a plum Harper job in London, and now this. What a joke. If he gets the Order of Canada, I want one too. I have done lots of good work, raised two kids - neither of whom are criminals (which one cannot say for Gordo), and have worked for over 40 years. That is better than his record.

Most of us know about Campbell, Dobell and Emerson. Perhaps there are questions to ask about other recipients that populate the list getting the honours, which included Liberal Party donors.

One example: search Elections BC site with name Aquilini and one reads about more than half a million in contributions to the Liberals. A small bit of Google work reveals something about the history of that family money. This article provides some links:

This is another reason why people are losing faith with our political system. How can anyone admire and believe in such a corrupt process. It doesn't do service to the people who really deserve that kind of recognition.

OK, the comment I sent first was too extreme....
it's not here. But, I guess the sixties really are over and even the
Straight has to worry about legal liabilities; there are
however ,three names on the list that are a waste of air.
It's just fucking bullshit-how wrong, how enraging-it's
pure betrayal. Fuck!
Bastards
(are ya gonna send this through...?)

We the undersigned citizens of British Columbia demand that Gordon Campbell not be awarded the Order of British Columbia. On Gordon Campbell’s watch poverty rates in BC soared to become the highest in Canada, homelessness increased massively, children’s health, safety and education were neglected or made worse, legal contracts were broken, our rivers and parks were destroyed by ill-conceived hydro projects and BC Ferries, BC Hydro and other public services have been destroyed. There is no justification for giving Gordon Campbell an award for his tenure as Premier of BC.

Order of BC, what's that. Another order, like at the drive thru. I'll have one Gordo burger with no taste. He's another live hero, it means nothing. He did nothing for free, he was getting paid to do a job. Maybe his family could give him the order of Dad or something. But, seeing as he was a drinker, I doubt it. He will always be that mug shot to me.

This award is nothing more than a Conservative attempt to polish Campbell's image now that he's been given the UK high commissioner's job in England. I doubt the royal family wants to hob knob with a guy whose only reputation is for drunk driving, a pathological liar and for being one of the most hated politicians in BC history.
