Vancouver Canucks to play at Rogers Arena for next 10 years

The Vancouver Canucks and Rogers Communications have entered into a 10-year agreement that will see the communications giant assume naming rights to the city's most-prominent sports arena and concert facility.

No financial details of the arrangement have been revealed, but the building that was known since its 1995 inception as General Motors Place will now be called Rogers Arena.

The Canucks and Rogers are already partners in terms of the team's major regional television deal, with 45 of the club's game shown locally on Rogers Sportsnet last season.

Rogers is heavily invested in professional sports, owning the Toronto Blue Jays along with the Rogers Centre, the baseball team's home field that was once known as the Skydome.

Being of the old school, I preferred it when public facilities were named after some good citizen. But selling the naming rights for a period of time isn't really a name at all, rather a built-in advertising deal.
I wish the media would refuse to use these dubious names. Instead they might refer to the Canucks' "at home", "home arena" and so on.
If they ever give it a real name, then I'll use it.

I'm glad they are finally getting rid of that ugly GM Place logo. I've always hated it. The new name is lame but at least Rogers customers are used to inflated prices so it goes hand in hand with venue.

I agree with naming places something well, interesting. The gardens, the forum, BC Place etc. I think it lends some permanence and history to a facility - who cares about the staples center, or GM place etc? Does this sort of advertising really work? Or does it just lead to the over saturated and bland advertising world we are constantly exposed too?
