Vancouver chefs competing in Gold Medal Plates 2012 announced
Six Vancouver chefs are among the 10 B.C. chefs that will compete in the 2012 Gold Medal Plates, a culinary competition that raises funds for the Canadian Olympic Foundation. The Vancouver competition, one of 10 staged across the country, will take place at the Westin Bayshore Hotel (1601 Bayshore Drive) on November 16. The winner of that competition will go on to compete in the Canadian Culinary Championships held in Kelowna in 2013.
Vancouver chefs competing this year include Angus An from Maenam, Quang Dang from West, Lee Humphries from C Restaurant, Joe Campo from the Westin Bayshore, and Taryn Wa of Savoury Chef Foods.
Other B.C. chefs who will be competing are Mark Filatow from Kelowna’s Waterfront & Wine Bar, Jeff Van Geest from Oliver’s Miradoro restaurant located at Tinhorn Creek Winery, Darin Paterson from Bogner’s of Penticton, and Nicholas Nutting from Tofino’s The Pointe at the Wickaninnish Inn.
During the Gold Medal Plates competition, each chef will be required to create one appetizer dish for up to 800 diners with assistance from no more than 10 assistants. Chefs will be judged on visual presentation, texture, taste, wine compatibility, originality, and “wow” factor by a panel of judges, including John Bishop, James Chatto, Sid Cross, Andrew Morrison, Barbara-Jo MacIntosh, Lesley Stowe, and Chef Rob Feenie, who won the Vancouver competition in 2011.
Tickets to Vancouver’s Gold Medal Plates start at $350 and can be purchased online.
