Vancouver Whitecaps' Southsiders merrily interrupt VIFF proceedings

The Georgia Straight’s Craig Takeuchi was reporting on the Vancouver International Film Festival's Dragons and Tigers Awards on the red carpet outside the Vogue Theatre early Thursday (October 6) evening when proceedings were interrupted by a noisy walk-by.

It wasn’t a protest, though, just a group of the Vancouver Whitecaps’ most ardent and colourful supporters, the Southsiders, probably having just left Doolin’s Irish pub up the street and marching to their new pitch, B.C. Place Stadium, to take on Real Salt Lake in an MLS match. (The ’Caps won, 3-0.)

Mr Newton got two out of three right. Not bad for a first try. The word he was looking for was 'supporter'. This correction brought to you by the south side.

No one there is a hooligan. I believe it was just after this chant we started with "WE WON'T RIOT"... So there, who are the hooligans now?

You are obviously at such a low lwvwl of education that you don't know any better but the Vancouver Southsiders are so far from being hooligans! They are against hooliganism! Unlike fans of another team in this city, hence the chant that the southsides were singing...WE DON"T RIOT!!!....WE DON"T RIOT!!! ECT!!!!!!

Steve obviously has no clue what a "hooligan" is, because the Southsiders are the farthest thing from it. On the contrary, they've been praised by Vancouver PD for the orderliness of the march. They even stop and wait for red lights before crossing an intersection, for crying out loud. Pretty much the opposite of hooligans, IMO.

I'm guessing you don't understand the term hooligan, but football supporters in Vancouver, including the Southsiders, are anything but. Please don't use a word that you don't comprehend or fully grasp. It may harm the positive efforts of those working towards building something special and meaningful in a city more known for sport related violence...and it makes you seem ignorant.

I think it's a refreshing change from drunken hockey hooligans eh ! I haven't seen a Southsider smash anything up in the city .. and they certainly wouldn't !

Drunken hooligans interrupting drunken egos. Get with it Steve, most of these people were as drunk as those attending VIFF. Too call the Southsiders hooligans is an insult. This is not Europe and these hardcore supporters are not violent hooligans. The Southsiders are different. They have passion for their team, the game, the community and they make the games fun to attend, they are allowed to stand, sing and enjoy a sporting event as it should. If you are indeed a sports fan....stay with the Canucks. We don't need you nor want you.

Steve, we agree with you: Vancouver does NOT need drunken soccer hooligans. However, if you are trying to suggest that's what the Southsiders are all about, then your comment is totally offside. Fact is, when we march we actually sing "We don't riot!" because we're embarrassed by the disgusting conduct of Vancouver hockey "fans" and other troublemakers who brought international shame upon our city. Also: check with the VPD and they will confirm that they generally deal with more fights and public intoxication incidents from one BC Lions or Canucks game than they do with an entire season of Whitecaps soccer. Our march to the match is a great example of how sports fans can bring a truly positive experience to public spaces. Join us at Doolin's for pint before the next match and you'll see that we're absolutely nothing like this very ugly stereotype you seem to have imagined.

I brought my five-year-old daughter along to the march and the game, because a) she is welcomed with open arms and b) a Whitecaps ticket is much more affordable than the prohibitive Canucks. The Southsiders and Whitecaps are exactly what this city needs: positive attitudes, civic pride, community involvement, and accessible, family-friendly entertainment!

He won't be the first or last person to make a comment regarding our marches. Get used to them. We promise, not to drink, swear, urinate, or make a nuisance of ourselves. (That's the hockey crowd)
We will however be the subject of numerous phone captures and open mouthed disbelief.

I can't promise not to swear TB ;-) Steve come to Doolin's even join us for a game in the Southside see what we are about for yourself and i'm sure a much more interesting story/article can be found :-)
