Vancouver's Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel putting iPads in every room

Guests of the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel will soon find a shiny tablet sitting in their rooms. Starting in mid July, the high-end hotel in Vancouver will have the iPad 2 in all of its 377 guestrooms and suites.

The Fairmont Pacific Rim says it's the first hotel in Canada to implement Intelity's ICE (Interactive Customer Experience) technology. This means guests will be able to use the iPad as a virtual concierge—for in-room dining orders, housekeeping requests, arranging airport transportation, looking up information on tourist attractions, and more.

The hotel will also launch a mobile app to allow guests to get started before they arrive. Apple released the iPad 2 in 2011, while the "new" third-generation iPad came out in March of this year.

This is very convenient. I wonder, will it be tethered to something so it can't leave the room? Or maybe they'll put a little card with it, like hotels do for bathrobes, very politely saying if you'd like to take it with you your card will be billed $419.

When you were a young man, dreaming of getting the big scoop, speaking truth to power, disseminating spin and crooked-speak for the good of the masses, is this the kind of hard-hitting journalism that you envisioned for yourself? Or did you see yourself cut-and-pasting the press release of a luxury hotel's recent implementation of new gadgetry into your prose (startling, razor-sharp exposition such as 'virtual concierge')?
