War artist Allan Harding MacKay destroys art work to protest Harper government

Renowned Canadian war artist Allan Harding MacKay is going to war himself—against the Harper government.

The Toronto-based artist, who was contracted by the Department of National Defense in Somalia in 1993, and in Afghanistan in 2002, will destroy five original art works based on these war zones to “symbolize a much larger destruction of Canada’s values relating to national governance,” according to a news release issued by MacKay.

“The values of openness, justice, honesty, fairness, and unfettered participation by all MPs is being held hostage by a government that holds the parliamentary system in deliberate contempt and fashions abusive policies impacting, but not limited to, veterans rights, First Nations rights, workers rights, protection of the environment, and foreign aid/diplomatic initiatives,” the news release goes on.

MacKay started his art action yesterday when, live on CBC’s Power & Politics, he shredded a painting depicting the Kandahar Air Field, and went on to decry the Harper government’s policies regarding veterans’ rights and First Nations Rights.

Today, at 3 p.m. EST, MacKay will destroy another four works at Centennial Flame on Ottawa’s Wellington Street.

Destroying art to make a political statement is a tactic that was used most recently in Italy. Last month, Antonio Manfredi, of the Casoria Contemporary Art Museum in Naples, started setting fire to artworks contained in the museum, in a protest against budget cuts. Manfredi vowed to continue burning three pieces a week unless the government made budgetary changes.

Even the host seems to have a tough time even controlling his own emotions in this interview. It is the artist's work. He may do with it what he sees fit.
He has made it his life's work documenting this country's role in the world, destroying his creations says more about us than it does about him. This is a very scary world we find ourselves in hopefully this story continues to attract attention.

Gee-zus H! The interviewer is a fucking moron! No ifs ands or buts. It's like he's NEVER heard the word "protest" until this actual interview. He is a complete and utter dummy and a disgrace.

The artist on the other hand is a TRUE protestor, genius and man of merit.

Great courage! For centuries, the world over, artists have expressed through their craft, their anger with unpopular governments, which take away people's rights, and this is no less a powerful protest than that of Picasso, Lorca and many others. It makes me feel proud to be a Canadian. I hope we will hear more from Mr. MacKay and his fellow compatriots, in the struggle that lies ahead.

@Fatty McGee

Do you think they give big media jobs to people who aren't controllable retards? Seriously...they might go off-script if they're able to think...

The artist has a lot of guts to make a statement of this nature.

I wish that more people could awaken from their trance like states and understand what he is saying. Thank you Allan Harding MacKay.

I know Allan and he's not at all the kind of person to go after the limelight on a routine basis for sensational purposes. He must believe very passionately in what's he's doing to be doing this.

Solomon: we haven't seen anything like that before here....

Time to see more.

Bravo, Allan. And it's time to see the catastrophe that cost Canadians twice as much as the other McKay said in Libya. An utter disgrace. A vital cog in a whole continent shattered, along with the people who lived there with so much going for them, free university and public services, amazing infrastructure, gone gone gone.

The UN report is out, horrific, and I just watched a bit of video of the black Africans, previously working in Libya, being forced to eat the old green flag with shots in the background, NATO's little helpers are now out of their minds, apparently hopelessly psychotic, on our taxes. For more of this everywhere, we need F-35s or whatever? Who are we going to do this to next?

Flip back to the celebration of victory in Libya, November 2011. Flip on to the summer air shows. Hurray hurray, look kiddies.

Keep tearing, Allan.

I hope this fool didn't get paid for work he chose to destroy for the attention.

He's just an older version of Brigette de Pape.
