Westboro Baptist Church: 0, Comic-Con counterprotesters: 1

Why do the Westboro Baptist Church and the infamous Fred Phelps even bother?

The demonstrations by this Kansas-based group (who run a Web site called God Hates Fags) constantly backfire.

They've held protests across America, but their attempt to stage protests in Canada, such as at the Winnipeg funeral of Tim McLean (the man who was beheaded on a Greyhound bus by a stranger) and at a performance of The Laramie Project in Vancouver in 2008, were called off as counterprotesters took action.

Their latest shenanigan, staging a protest at Comic-Con 2010 last Thursday (July 22) in San Diego, wilted under the power and ingenuity of their opposition's greatest weapon: humour.

Counterprotesters showed up in costumes (including a man dressed up as Jesus) and carried with signs that read:
All glory to the Hypno-Toad
God hates Jedi
God hates kittens
Odin is God: Read The Mighty Thor #5
Is this thing on?
Have you seen my kids?
Kill all humans (sign held by a Futurama robot)
Magnets: How the ?*! do they work???

Why does the WBC bother? Because the Bible commands Christians to warn you rebels that God is going to judge you and send you to Hell ... even though we Christians know already that you are not going to listen. God demands a witness. Someone who will testify on Judgment Day that YOU were warned and refused to listen.

The WBC are not Christians, they are a deluded cult headed by an equally-deluded man who is nothing more than a hatemonger. They pride themselves on spreading pain and misery to people, and use religion as a grounds to spread their hate.

Thankfully, I am an Agnostic, that way I am free of these Old-Testament incarnate lunatics who use a bronze-age text to justify their bigotry.

Mary, why bother making a comment like that? It isn't satirical or comedic, its just a waste. People go around preaching things and sometimes they are annoying like the WBC whose members are basically just the family. It isn't just religious people who preach, ever hear what words come out the mouth of an atheist preaching their religion of non-believing citing atheist scripture and famous atheists. Which is exactly akin to a Roman Catholic citing the Bible, and talking about the Pope.

Another point on the talking about gods fighting gods, Hinduism: 6 billion gods in orthodox teachings. Get some.

Too bad the WBC chickened out in 2008 over the Laramie Project.
I was excited about the prospect of pelting them with projectiles. (Hey, that's alliteration!)

I know they stick their poor brainwashed children on the front line so we would have played nice and used only water-balloons and eggs, I'm not a monster! Heheh

Why does the WBC bother? Because it's publicity, and it's a chance to provoke people into taking some action which the phelpsies can then sue them for. That's how the WBC gets its income: lawsuits.

I understand you yokels disagreeing with what Mary says, but you are just showing your cruel side when you make fun of her. I guess that's to be expected of "liberal, left wing, compassion". Dear "Reverend" Phelps, unlike your hateful deity, my G-d is infinitely loving and compassionate, even when it comes to fools such as yourself. Do you recall the commandment which warns against taking His name in vain? All too often people misinterpret it to mean cursing. It has nothing to do with that. Rather, it is a warning to people such as yourself, who dare to justify their own evil actions by invoking His name. You dare not dare sir. G-d decides what is or isn't a sin, not you, or the members of your so called "church". There is a special place in hell for those who turn His children away from Him through their evil twisting of His message, and the abuse of his creation. You sir, stand warned, that your abuse of your children, and the children of G-d will see you condemned, as surely as you dare to condemn others.
