Xena fights Arctic oil drilling
It's been a while since Lucy Lawless starred in Xena: Warrior Princess. These days, the New Zealand actor is battling Arctic oil drillers instead of the God of War.
According to the environmental group Greenpeace, Lawless was one of six activists who today (February 23) boarded a Shell-contracted oil drillship in New Zealand, climbed up the derrick, and occupied it.
In a news release, Lawless declares:
I’m blocking Shell’s Arctic drillship because I believe passionately that renewable energy is the way of the future. We don’t have to go to the ends of the earth to suck out every last drop of oil. Instead we need to smarten up and begin the transition to a clean, green, sustainable energy future and right now that means keeping Shell out of the Arctic.
Greenpeace says the protest stopped the ship, which is bound for the Chukchi Sea off Alaska to drill three exploratory oil wells this summer, from leaving the port of Taranaki as scheduled.
