Kudo's to the Election Day Volunteers at the Voting Stations!

Every time I vote, I am always charmed by the diverse array of people who volunteer their time to facilitate the democratic process. They often are immigrants (in my area) and it reminds me every time of what a privilege it is to vote, and how they might understand that than any Canadian born Canadian. Regardless of their reasons, I salute them all. Thanks!!

They're not volunteers. Government pay them a crap load of money to sit there and check off names. Honestly, they are getting paid way more for the job they do.

I thought they got paid. A "crap load" unlikely - although a P3 with Depends could be interesting...

I thought they were volunteers as well, when i voted yesterday i mentioned to the girl who was taking my info that i was appreciative of her volunteer time, she laughed and said 'you're kidding right? i'd never sit here for free".
nice.

Who cares if they are paid? They are providing a service and one that is very much needed. Thanks to all the men and women who do this work.

More money than a normal job's pay

They get approx $250 tax-free for the day's work and another $35 tax free for attending a training session. They don't do much, mainly chat with the people working alongside them. When they do facilitate the process, however, it's important to get it right. I know. I did it one year. Easy money.

Been there

It's a pretty serious commitment, working a polling booth. You couldn't do it with volunteers. You wouldn't. They have to be there all day, barely leaving the room, the party reps are all there watching, and they can't leave until their count is done. Think about it - if they were volunteering, they could flake out at any time, and then what? Yes, it costs a lot of money having an election, but would you rather not have them? PS next election, why not go to your local election office and sign up to work. Then you'll see what great, easy money it is ...
