On Recycling!

Come on, non-recyclers in Vancouver. The city can't make it any easier for you to recycle. I'm tired of going down into our ever so environmentally friendly building garbage/recycle area that it's not being utilized properly. Please stop throwing your pizza boxes and your orange juice containers in the garbage. Quit being lazy and please recycle them. For goodness sakes, the big blue recycle bin is literally four feet adjacent to the garbage. Vancouver is one of the greenest (or at least some of us try) cities in North America. Let's keep up the good reputation and keep global warming at bay. PS: Just in case you forget, I've attached a photo for you of what these bins look like.

you meant to confess you go through the trash or that you would like to be a hall monitor, otherwise, this is just a rant.

Who cares? She has a valid point. Most confessions on here are actually rants and are you about to monitor them all? Maybe you should be the hall monitor of confessions.

Of course, recycling will save the world. What a load of tosh! Until companies are forced to make goods from recycled materials it doesn't matter how we dispose of things. Lots of potential landfill sites left!

not sure that recycling helps with global warming since a great deal of energy and expense is required by the recycling process.

Actually, if people aren't going to separate their recyclables and make a mess of the blue bins, as I've seen in our building's room, I'd just as soon they threw their trash in the trash.

life cycle cost

Anyone know where to get a study of the life cycle cost of recycling material, vs using new? I would bet, as "cul de sac" points out, that the huge amount of energy put into recycling reduces the perceived benefits to zero if not negative. Just because it seems good, doesn't mean it is good. Start, with using less to begin with.

if you actually look into the environmental impact, recycling paper does more damage than good. There was a paper bleaching plant down the the States but has since closed down. Now all paper destined for recycling gets shipped to China on a ship, then doused with harsh chemicals before being good for use again (and then shipped back here). Recycling paper only makes you *feel* better. Green lawns on top of condos and commercial buildings are a new trend and require a tarp beneath the soil to protect the building, to offset the carbon foot print of the tarp used takes more years than the lifespan of the lawn.

With that said, I do support recycling certain things.

Get off your high horse and do some research.

In Vancouver, pizza boxes are only recyclable if they're clean, and orange juice containers only belong in the blue box if there wasn't a deposit paid on them and they're not drink boxes or wax cartons.

Next week: how to flush a public toilet.
