Popular music fans

...are morons. WHY isn't Jack White's "Lazaretto" number one on the charts? The first kick-ass, balls-to-the-wall, molten, genuine rock and roll song I have heard in months!! Instead, shit like "Happy" and "Fancy" are skyrocketing to the top, and Iggy Azalea is matching the Beatles with having both the #1 and #2 single at the same time? Where am I? Arrakis?! Wait--there's probably better music there. What the everloving fuck has happened to rock music, or rock music fans? I'd even take some (forgive me) Third Eye Blind or (God help me here) Spin Doctors any day over what is current popular music. Everything is supposed to go in cycles...after the late 90's, we got grunge, etc. But this phase of disposable, plastic shit isn't ending. At all. I think the internet killed rock and roll.

If Jack White's your idea of classic rock

or classic anything, you must be about 20 years old. You need a schooling in musicology... Bowie, Neil Young, Alice Cooper, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Queen (with their original singer) I'd go on, but there aren't enough characters in the world to evin begin to name them.

...until you said 3rd eye blind. They are equal to backstreet boys, nickelback, etc in my opinion. But the real reason that stations play crap is because they get paid to.
Most people have more specific tastes, and Jack White (as well as countless others) don't appeal to the masses. Fortunately for you there is a ton of great music out there, and all you have to do is go to grooveshark or youtube and find it.
If you don't know where to start, I second the Doors. Also there was a lot of good stuff from the early-mid 90's that you must have missed due to your youth.

If we all listened to Jack White and it became number 1 on the "charts", then he would be, by definition, "popular music". Then that would make you the moron.

lots of reasons

1. Only morons still buy music because...
2. Records (and especially downloads) cost too much
3. There's a whole history of great rock records to choose from and a ton of great bands putting out music today so the sales of any one artist will be diluted by personal tastes.

Anyway, don't worry about it. A number one record used to sell 10 million in it's first week. Now a number one record might sell a million if they're lucky. And these record breaking numbers are totally skewed nowadays by downloads. I doubt anyone is buying anything but those two songs by Iggy Azalea so congrats to her for squeezing 2 bucks out of a million idiots. Lets see how many of them will go to her shows.

Quite a few of you commenters are missing the point. First of all, Led Zep, Pink Floyd et al are classic rock, as even my 4-year old niece would know. WHERE in my post did I say Jack White was classic rock?! He is contemporary rock & roll with many influences from Led Zep and the blues. I am not in my twenties. Do not condescend to me, please. I was trying to say that I very much miss a good, kick-ass rock song making it to the top of the charts.

And @Double Edged Sword, you need some reading comprehension skills, because you're being a troll on purpose.

Secondly, I was trying to make a point by referencing a couple of extremely unpalatable bands from the 90's as being preferential to what is topping the charts these days. I know my music very well, being well into my thirties and a musician, to boot. And The Doors are NOT emblematic of great music.

@Jacks albums...I like your point very much. There just needs to be a break in the brainless monotony of pop music, he could be that break, but I don't see anything coming. Thanks for your comment.

... said exactly what I was about to. And, you sound like your parents.

The whole discussion about music and what sucks and what's good is ridiculous to start with. There are more than 7 billion opinions about what's good and what isn't. Are you really going to tell me what I like is shit? Am I really going to convince you that music you don't like is actually really good and you're a moron?

Of course not. How about, all music appeals to someone, and it's not a matter of right or wrong.

Get the hell over yourself! I'm not a huge fan of pop music either, but you can't call people morons just because they don't like the same music as you. The history or obscurity of the music you like does not make you superior to anyone else.

Live and let live, stop being so angry over something so tedious. Listen to what you like and don't stress yourself over what other people choose to listen to. The world would be a very very boring place if we all had the exact same interests.

Taste in music does not correlate to intelligence. I know lots of brilliant people who have extremely simple tastes in music, most likely because they don't have enough time to listen to a big variety; they are too busy using their left brains.
Moreover, classical music is far more complex than anything Jack and his ilk could ever puke up/shit out.
