Ten years at my job and my boos wont give meaningful full-time work.

It doesn't take an expert in Human resource Management to tell you that employers who cannot fire you have ll kinds of way of try to make you leave. In my case my employer dragged my name through the mud for years, never giving me an objective evaluation of my work but always relying on the subjective "perceptions" of third parties who knew nothing about my job anyway. Recently when a senior position was vacated and I was clearly the next in line my boss(es) moved the goal post in so many different directions by changing the job description and making indirect statements about my qualifications I knew there was no point in even applying. No I have taken a one year leave during which I will shift my entire life to another country in order to try and start from zero. Seriously, I would have better chance of getting full-time work if I had worked in at a big-box grocery-store for as long as I have been at my job. I hate my boss. He is a shark and a hypocrite. I really hope he burns in hell.

Maybe your poor writing and proofreading skills are holding you back.

"I really hope he burns in hell."

Unlikely. What will happen is that he will get promoted to a higher management position where he has even more power to make your life miserable... and maybe finally fire you. He could care less if you move to another country and start a new life.

Bosses like that lust for such high places to gain power and money, and attain the bragging rights for doing so. I work for a large multinational where I'm just a worker bee, and there are days when so many people higher up the pyramid bombard me with orders that I'm not sure who is my boss anymore. At the end of the day, it's all about themselves making themselves look good, at the expense of worker bees like myself. And they gain much satisfaction from making our lives miserable.

The thing that separates such bosses from the rank-and-file worker bees like ourselves is that they know how to play politics. They know how to quickly make lasting connections with the insiders at the company who can help them rapidly move up the corporate ladder. They know what they want, and will do what it takes to get it. The whole notion of being rewarded a job promotion for hard, honest work is simply false. It's not how hard you work... it's who you know. It is much worse in some companies than others.

Not everyone can play the game, navigate the political minefield and fight the cutthroat competition to get to the top. That's why there are worker bees like ourselves who are resigned to a meaningless existence, and are reminded every day that we are small, insignificant, and aren't going anywhere. Sure, we can simply quit our jobs and find something else... but unless the next job is a supervisory or management position, the vicious cycle will repeat itself. It's unfair, but that is reality.

You don't need to change countries to change jobs. Just a thought. Also, no one owes you anything. Any business has the right to make decisions that they believe are in the best interests of their business. Love, the Robot Monster.

It simply sounds like your work place is not a good match for your personality and skills. You are so worried about what everyone thinks of you, it becomes your first priority. You need to find a new job, ASAP. If you work in retail - and I think you do - consider changing careers. Good luck :)

it seems to me the less selective or less demanding academic wise your profession is, the higher probability of having to deal with zoo like atmosphere at work. People with advanced degrees at best universities particularly on technical field and subsequently hired by selective companies are less like to work with outright a-holes because these people generally have respect for facts and less likely to be motivated by bs like office politics and perceptions. Another word, you want to work with nerds who are smart. This is another reason why people want their children to be doctors, dentists, scientists etc. lawyers are swines.

all folks deserve to work with dignity and respect regardless of what they do. My above comment was ill conceived.

burn in hell because he knows exactly what he is doing. I often wondered why people act like a-holes at work and what I have found over course of 20 plus years is because they can if they know there are no repercussions. People act accordingly to the societal norms as they understand. Western culture has really no clear rigid societal norms so people do whatever they can get away with to grossly generalize.

I had this idea about loyalty and putting my head down and powering through problems so I stuck around in terrible job situations. The sad part is I was eventually let go as soon as it was convenient for the employer to do so.

Start looking for another job. Don't quit in a huff and put yourself in a bind, just look for something else and move on when you get the chance.
