All I want for Christmas is a bad cold.

Ive had it with breaking the bank in order to satiate the lust of other peoples materialistic wants. And all I get in return is supermarket boxed soap or socks.I don't want to eat bland turkey with people I cant stand and who I pay no attention to the rest of the year.I dont want the parkade road rage incident s during the crazy shopping season.I dont want to be bombarded with useless shmaltsy crap.....so this year ill be sick with a bad cold on Dec.24 to 27.And I will have no choice but to stay home with takeout and my boxed sets of Friends and ER.

It's not that easy to escape Christmas b.s. People will have gone ahead and got you the cheap gifts as they do every year.

They will want you to get them so will bug you to make arrangements and of course will be looking for their gifts.

Best to tell everyone that you are not doing gifts anymore and then be "sick" at Christmas.

You don't need to hurt yourself to save money.

For spelling it out as it is: a big consumerfest. I always feel tremendous pressure to do everything: all the holiday parties, gifting, sending cards, etc. And I end up feeling so resentful. So I've instituted a no-gift policy and tell everyone in November, so they know not to expect anything from me, nor do they need to buy me anything. I gave up on the cards to the general masses and only send out cards to people I truly think made a difference in my year. And I look at all the red and gold crap in the stores with disdain and just stay away from retail stores because the lineups are insane and people are completely crabby. I would love to just vacate and go to an island and just let Christmas pass. I don't have much extra spending money throughout the year and so I refuse to go into more debt for all this seasonal crap.

This is the best idea I've heard all year. There may just be an epidemic this year...

Yes, many aspects of Christmas are disgusting, but you should consider yourself lucky that people invite you to their events. Ignore the worst parts of the season and focus on the best. And tell people you don't want any presents and also will not be giving gifts. Most people will understand.

Last year

I told everyone I was burnt out on Christmas and was not doing anything this time. No tree, no turkey, no gifts, no decorations, no cards, no baking. You do have to make it known quite clearly several times. I had so much free time and no stress. It would not work if you had young children, but ours are grown and didn't seem to care, almost felt the same way. I went with a friend to a candlelight service on Ch'mas eve which was very peaceful and musically uplifting. This might not be for everyone but I was brought up with this tradition and found it meaningful.
I think the reason many of us burn out is that the season is now over 2 months long and so overdone.

I think I might change my Christmas card MO this year. Thanks!
