Yes, a banana would hold up. You don't actually peel the banana, although I guess you could. You get one of those young, fresh bananas. The ones that are hard to peel and firm.

I actually use an innocuous everyday object as a sex toy when I travel. That's what I did before I got my first real toy. Experiment with different things. An alternative is to use food like you did. The best thing I found is a carot: right shape, tender but hard enough, and durable enough to be used for many hours. It feels almost like the real thing! (A banana tends to break because it's too soft and a cucumber too watery.) Alternativly, you can find small vibrators shaped like lipsticks for a couple of bucks on eBay. Or you could just bring your regular toy, and check in your luggage instead of carrying it on the plane. Checked-in luggages are usually never opened for domestic flights. Hope this helps! ;)
