Expired Food and Drink
posted November 23rd, 2014 at 10:34 PM
My parents just dropped off some juice boxes and a cake from Safeway. Sounds great, right?
The problem is that it was all expired.
My confession... I think I'm going to eat it anyway.

Dan offers some advice on where she might find it.
You were sitting by yourself & you ordered a few Curry Fish Balls and a few deep-fried Spring...

You definitely can't let a Safeway cake go to waste.

the expiry date. People assume if stuff is on the shelves you can buy it. Anyway, most things are still good after the date except fish and chicken. Enjoy!

The juice is good as long as the box isn't bulging (fresh juice gone bad releases gases). The cake, probably factory-made and loaded with preservatives, is good within 2 weeks of expiry, probably even more. Don't worry about the cream being dairy-gone-bad because over the past few years, Safeway has been using more and more sugar and starch in their "cream" and less actual dairy. Enjoy, and freeze some for later!

watch the doc 'Just Eat It". available here https://www.knowledge.ca/program/just-eat-it
they talk about food waste and recovery in Vancouver. they also discuss the misconceptions about expiry dates (no such thing except on baby formula) and best before dates. a VERY good watch and food for thought.
what?

Why are you parents giving you expired food?
Why are they even buying it????
silly parents. throw it out
can't sell

Every DECENT grocery store REMOVES expired food from their shelves. They will not sell it.
Do not shop at a store that doesn't.

Thank you so much for the link. I was so mad at myself for missing the screening at VIFF.
No more food waste!

Everyone needs to see Just Eat It. It is a fantastic movie that opened my eyes about how much perfectly good food we're throwing out and now I'm asking the supermarkets for their older products and am going to try searching the dumpsters! Good on you!
