If I had a kid in daycare, or even being babysat on a regular basis, I would make a point of showing up unexpectedly every now and then ... just sayin' ...

Can setup a nanny cam at home if being babysat?. Then you'll know for sure if someone is being shady. But at a daycare center i would show up randomly the odd time too.
Wise idea

You can tell a lot about a daycare place when you show up unexpectedly.
In an example of myself showing up unexpectedly at a prospective daycare, I was SWARMED by a group of children on arrival. They were obviously unengaged, lacking adult attention, and very needy. Instantly I decided I would never register my son there, as the children showed me what a poor environment they were in. Had I shown up at a "scheduled" time, I may not have experienced this.
(For the record, when I arrive unexpectedly at my current son's daycare, none of the kids notice me because they are happy playing with each other, or in activities, and not looking to me to provide some unmet need.)
Whoa whoa whoa!

Hold on now! Showing up at your child's daycare apart from at drop-off or pick-up would involve you actually taking a more active role in raising said child.
