I am officially a foolish old Old Person.

I smirk at young people's fashions, I judge them, I wonder why they have such crap taste in music. I lament earlier decades and why things have taken such a turn for the worse, curse the internet for destroying attention spans / popular culture, wish things were still firmly rooted in the mid-90's before the internet exploded and when there was at least surface-level equal opportunity in rock and roll. I miss rock and roll making it to the Top Ten. I miss Guns n' Roses. I silently resent hipsters thinking they've discovered something kitschy and underground in the form of bands that I grew up loving and seeing live in concert and who were considered just plain old awesome music. I am having trouble going with the flow of life. I think young people are far more sheep-like, generic, and clone-ish than possibly any other generation. I am old enough to call those same people "kids" yet I have none of my own. I am sad enough in my crisis to actually be posting to the Georgia Straight Confessions. I am an Old. And I am not yet 40. And this is my confession.

I think this is a good time of the year when there are a number of vacancies available in old folks homes & the weather's been great for lawn bowling too.

Dubstep

Omg! dub step makes my ears bleed! It sounds like the garbage truck emptying out the bin in the mornings. The day I first heard dub step was the day I felt officially old.

Yes, you are

Not every young person is the same, you know. The things you are complaining about, were complained about by the older people of every generation before you. So, you, and your generation, are just as sheeplike as the rest of us. Because originality doesn't exist.

Thanks, OP.

I recently stayed at the Hard Rock Cafe Hotel in Las Vegas. The lobby was filled with rock'n'roll memorabilia: stunning Led Zeppelin black and white photos, Axl Rose's outfits on mannequins, Nirvana's guitars, etc.

I realized that the music of today won't be in this Hall of Fame. What would they possibly put behind a glass cage: Armin Van Buuren's laptop?

Listening to someone SING and watching people play real instruments.... I miss that too.

Hilarious. I can just hear you letting out a "hmph" and smoothing out your plaid flannel before sitting down to type out this amusingly butt-hurt comment!

Golden years

Imagine what it's like for those of us 10-20 years older than you, whose salient years were in the 70's and 80's, You know. I've never even heard of this Armin Van Buuren guy.

I suspect very few people under the age of 35 can even clue into what you're on about!

Great confession

I'm 10 years older than the op and I agree. I think those of us that have those extra 10 years have it even worse. We remember a time when privacy was sacred. We lived through Watergate. We discussed it at the dinner table and school. Now there is NO expectation of privacy. I had such high hopes for my life and I'm proud of much of it, but things I have no control over like the internet and wars based on oil consumption have taken the heart right outta me. My dad was a Marine in Vietnam, I thought that would be the last of those idiotic *police actions). The future isn't looking too bright either.

Agree on most points OP . Every generation sees the one after it as shite and daft . So on that note , the hipsters will view the ones after them in the same light I imagine .

Do feel that technology is fast reducing humans to drones and non-communicating , eye contact avoiding unhappy people . I have two kids and it's hard to see a better world than now in 20 years .

Doesn't help with governments being completely unaccountable for any of their dubious actions or wastes of funds , seems the corporations and banks are running the gov'ts these days .

In the future there will be four big corporations running everything .

Ok doom and gloom predictions over , time for a cold beer, comfy chair and an interesting book .
