My Friends Are Delightful, But

They're painfully unreliable. They make plans only to break them. I'll invite them out for dinner/drinks/to see a movie and they'll say yes then bail at the last second or come up with immediate excuses. And on the off-chance we do hang out, most of them spend the whole time complaining about how tired they are or lecturing us on their latest social justice cause. It's hard to meet people in this city. Or at least it seems like it's hard to meet people who don't flake out and will commit to hanging out. I adore my friends, but I'm starting to think I need to give up on them.

I can totally relate to this post in regards to these heroes of social justice. Its so incredibly ego-centric and presumptuous of these people to be always on their soap boxes. As if someone elected them to save the world. It makes them so unattractive and boring.

Totally understand you

I give friends two chances. If they bail on me twice at the last minute before our plans, I don't invite them out anymore, and I make efforts to make new friends. I've had friends bail on me within one hour of start time after I've arranged/paid for concert tickets for them. So it's two strikes, you're out. I don't have time for flakes and lavish my attention on the good folks.

It's better that you see people's true colours now. If these people act so rudely during the "good times", they most likely will be terrible friends when things are "bad" (ie. you get laid off, get injured, pet dies, etc.)

Lastly, if you don't feel energized/happy/connected after you've socialized with people, then there's no point in hanging out. Out of obligation I met up with one friend to "catch up" but was so irritated after by the quality of our conversation that I realized we are not compatible as friends.

This is a shout out to my two good friends who have taught me how committed, reliable, intelligent, helpful and thoughtful real friends can be. Now I realize I never need to put up with garbage from friends.

I know you will find good new friends in the future. It can happen by chance, when you least expect it (and this is how I met the two above mentioned wonderful people).
