My confession is I'm 55 and have never owned a car or even a license. I never bother people asking for rides and always get around very well whether it be walking, bike, bus etc. so it's really not a problem. The only problem is in a car-centric society I sometimes feel ashamed.

I've never had one either. I think that with all the terrible drivers out there, maybe I just had a sense that I'd not be patient enough to be a good driver. I'm pretty sure that road rage would be a danger for me. You're right, people think it's abnormal, but you have to get beyond that shit. If you lived in NYC, you'd feel right at home. I really don't know why other people think it's any of their damn business whether or not I have a driver's license, cuz it sure as hell doesn't concern them.
no need to feel ashamed.

Plenty of other cities in the world are full of people who NEVER have cars. I'm thinking London, Manhatten etc.
Also many of the older generations of Canadians didn't drive. Please don't feel bad- you are doing something great for the planet by not having a vehicle & you are probably healthy from a bit of extra walking/ biking.
Good for you!!!
You sound fairly self-sufficient in getting around

... via walking, biking and bussing. You're not relying on others to get you to destinations.
I do wonder about the 30 and 40 year old women that I know who do not know how do drive, and just expect their boyfriends/husbands to taxi them around everywhere. I think in a partnership, both people should share the responsibility because with driving comes a lot of thought in organizing and planning as well. Expecting someone else to do all the driving all the time is really a red flag to me, that you're shirking a huge chunk of responsibilities.

You sound stupid. A number of professionals I know do not drive; I'm referring to lawyers, physicians, teachers, professors, etc. Wake up! The age of the private motor vehicle is coming to an end.
I did get my license

but don't have a car, and haven't driven in years because I don't like driving and prefer using transit. I think it's totally fine to be this way as long as you are sufficient in getting around yourself and are not depending on other people to constantly give you rides everywhere (because in that case, I could see why people would be annoyed with your car-less lifestyle). But it sounds like you're all good in that respect, so good for you!

It's nice to hear of others who don't want a car. I've known most of my life that I haven't wanted to waste my money or concerns on a car. When I have used my parents car or rented one, I feel imprisoned and just hate it. It's so much easier to get around when you aren't spending all that time looking for a parking spot.

Perhaps it depends somewhat on your perspective because in Amsterdam, you're just like 90% of the population. Here, less so.
And personally I don't think there's any reason for you to feel any shame. Driving's no biggie and it sounds like you're getting around just fine.

I really enjoy when I don't have a car. Funny how vehicles are sold as symbols of freedom but in my reality they've been a huge ball and chain. I'll take a bike and bus and day.
