Scared of the Smoke

The smoke scares me, especially that people don't seem more concerned. Where are their instincts? If there were this much smoke in only your home, I guarantee you would be getting outside until it cleared. What's wrong with this species?

So what do you suggest? That everybody spill out onto the streets and start screaming bloody murder? Is that the reaction that would help you calm down?

I agree with you, I live in the city and since it got quite bad yesterday afternoon i've kept my windows closed, even though it SO hot. I don't want to breath that. Not to mention that everything you own will smell like camp fire. FOREVER. In the building across from me everyone has their windows and doors open. Good luck not developing a bad cough or getting that smell out of everything.
Had no one in BC ever stood in front of campfire? No matter how much you wash your clothes thats all you smell.

Your joking right?
We know the smoke is from fires hundreds of miles from here, any thinking logical mind can figure out that there's no direct threats.

We are screwed I only wish I could meet a partner that is as well versed in common sense as I.

It's called a super dry and fire season for a reason..

Over 500 forest fires burning right now in BC??? And they're putting in effort like you wouldn't believe to help with this right now. But you posting online helps right? GO Do something then!! geez

Try living in the interior where this is regular every few years - but you have the smoke haze for a week or two instead of 24 hours.

We are going to be ok, Vancouver is not in a drought and it won't burst into flames at any moment. Get outside and enjoy the heat, it'll be gone soon.

@ OP & @YES

you're kind of screwed even if you stay indoors. most places are not completely air tight, therefore whatever particles are in the smoke will eventually find their way into your home...and then you have all the windows closed!!! no air circulation...just the bad stuff getting in...that scenario doesn't make much sense to me either.

That's just 1 website, there's others and the news that will claim you're wrong. IF everything is so FINE, then why have they blown over 50 million past their budget and are possibly going to ask the US for help? Which has never been done before. Thanks for your fail post.

I think Bill epiromizes what's wrong with our species. So if there were this much smoke in your house, you wouldn't make every effort to clear it? And if you couldn't, wouldn't you flee? And if you couldn't flee, wouldn't that suck? And isn't it appropriate to talk about how it sucks that people are trapped in deadly cities without much mobility, rather than saying stuff like "gee, there's nothing to be done, so why bother caring"?

We have satellites that continually scan for all sorts of military purposes---why not for fires? We have a billion dollar drone industry to shoot and kill people in the middle east; why don't we have a billion dollar fire-fighting drone industry? Are you trying to tell me that there is more economic benefit to shooting at poor people in the middle east than in protecting BC from fires? Our whole society is grossly mismanaged; if we spent as much on fire suppression as we spend on welfare for the military, we would have a continuously monitored satellite grid that detects fires, dispatches drones to put them out. Indeed, it could be largely automated.

As for the idea that I thought Vancouver would burst into flames...no...no...I just don't see any real concern from people, I see the same sort of slack-jawed "oh, well, whatever happens happens" attitude that I bet will prevail for everything short of an earthquake of sufficient magnitude.

I understand that there is a natural fire cycle, etc. etc. but there are certain areas where that simply cannot be allowed, and I don't think it's that we don't have the technology, it's that we're horribly mismanaged by morons.

@sky

So, if one cannot avoid particulate matter indoors or outdoors, and one must go outdoors to get groceries, etc. etc. then it seems quite prudent to leave. And keep in mind that cities always have higher levels of particulate matter than less developed areas; it is clear that cities are a blight on the planet and produce people conditioned to not even understand how polluted their environment is.
