It took you 5 years to make eye contact with somebody. Perhaps your social skills may be the issue.

weird. personally i don't like the feel of ocular to ocular, especially with strangers. shaking hands is much less awkward.

Perhaps they gave you the ol' ocular patdown before you noticed them and did not like what they looked at. Therefore no second glance, no eye contact.

Excellent job! Dont get too carried away though, I suggest waiting a year or two before you do it again...moderation, ya know...
