Wake Up

I don't have a cell phone. I don't want one. I don't know about you, but when I'm outside I want to be there, I want to see it. I want to look at the sunset, the ocean. Read a book. Enjoy walking. Make eye contact with somebody. Talk in person. Write with a pen on paper. Take pictures that aren't for posting. Put my toes in the grass. I want to live within my means and be able to travel the world. I want to wake up in a tent away from all these fools glued to their devices. Look up. The world is about to start crashing around us. The weather is getting crazy. The kids everybody has to do what everybody is supposed to do are not going to have a healthy planet to grow up on. Most people are too lazy to get a reusable cup for their daily coffee. Instead, they throw a new one away every day. Get the new car, the new phone, the new clothes. Do you think about where those perfectly-fine-still things go after they're disposed of? In large piles in the ever-warming ocean, on which all life depends. I just want to slap the next person I see trying to text and walk and just say, 'do you think this is important, in the grand scheme of things?' When you are on your death bed, will you be thankful for the number of text messages you sent in your lifetime? For your iphone version 45.0? Your monthly car payment? None of this stuff matters. Wake up. Don't get me wrong, our planet will be fine - she'll re-cooperate. We, on the other hand, will be wiped off this planet like the leeches we are because of our own continual doing, and you need a selfie stick? I can't deal with seeing this shit day in and day out. Fucking look outside yourself. There's not much we can do now from within this downward trajectory, but we can fucking enjoy every last minute of life beyond the screen.

uh, nothing is important 'in the grand scheme of things'. the universe is dying and there won't even be the fabric of space left at the end. i know you mean well but you come off as really condescending. some people enjoy using computers/phones and who are you to tell them what they should be doing with their lives?

Thanks for your confession; I agree with you 100%.

You sound like a person I wish I knew. And I don't say that very often.

While I also enjoy most of the same things that you do, I also love technology and everything that we are (and will be) able to do in the future. The answer to the current world problems aren't necessarily to go back to the ancient farming and agricultural methods but instead to use our new knowledge of sciences and technology to design a better future. You may think you know better than others how the world should work but instead you sound closed minded and ignorant about the wonderful endless possibilities that nature and technology can provide us.

Should be no surprise that I agree with this post. When the power went out I heard everyone complain about nothing to do. I took my flashlight and went for a stroll, sat in my favourite spot and a step the hours looking at the stars. I take transit and only the older folk seem aware of the world around them.

I own a phone due to work and family reasons but it doesn't run me. I use my laptop to watch videos because I can't stand the drivel on TV.

However OP, you're not alone and never feel that way. I understand the fist ration but don't let it get the best of you. It's better to just enjoy what makes you happy, trying to change the world will leave you exhausted. Lead by example and organize nature walks at a community center or with your friends.

Keep on trucking hoss

You are me, i am you!
I couldn't agree more. I have all the devices for work, and without the endless texts and emails i wouldn't be able to do my job. saying that i am the only person in my office that seems to want to get away from it all and just live off the land in a converted container somewhere. If i could afford a small piece of land close to the water anywhere up the coast i would be there now. I would trade it all to just get out of the rat race and to not be around rich people that don't understand the world.

Any child who is brave enough to share your beliefs will also have to be brave enough to suffer 5 years of ostracism in high school.

Aw c'mon, things aren't so bad. Once upon a time there used to be very real talk of winnable nuclear war. Countries settling their differences by annihilating the other side and the planet as well. So people glued to mobile devices is no biggie...

I've lived and felt like this since before there were Smartphones or Internet.
