Tough day

It is really a tough year for me. I lost my wife to cancer in January 14 and I was laid off before she died. I am still unemployed two years later. I have been sending out resumes in the Lower Mainland and networking like crazy. I had a bad experience with a particular company. I was called for an interview. I went through some testing and two more job interviews with the group. They wanted work samples so I dug up through boxes and my computer for samples.. Afterwards, no call back after I had my last interview. I called them but no one returned my calls. This is NOT the only instance. Some people say that this is unprofessional. This is rude. Do not get me started with staff in Human Resources! In another instance, I have a MBA and this Director in HR (female) asked what team I played in the NBA. I corrected her that I have a MASTERS degree in Business Administration and I do not play for the National Basketball Association!

Sorry for your loss

It will get better. :) With the tough job market and Vancouver being so popular, the companies forget their manners. If the balance tips the other direction, it would be different. Start your own business!! A proper recruiting company that treat candidates with respect?

Same with HR in the government

I got a job with the federal government in April, the HR woman told me that if I didn't get my Master's degree by the start date (Sept. 1), they would kick me out. I told her I was going to submit my thesis in early August (and get it accepted and all) but wouldn't get my degree or diploma until grad ceremony. She kept threatening me, and clearly it was an ego trip for her. When I started the job, my boss said not to worry about it and that it was only an administrative hassle since clearly I have completed all the work for the degree. None of the newly graduated employees had their diplomas yet either.

I was lucky I got a job right out of school, and a government job is one of the most secure out there in addition to all the benefits (and less stress than most industry jobs too). Maybe you could apply?

That's why there's recruiters. They do a FAR better job than those HR monkeys...

Stupid!

That would be funny if it weren't so pathetically stupid.

Not alone

The professional "recruiter" I saw yesterday suggested a minimum wage job for me, without even looking at my resume. Is this what it comes to? What a giant waste of time and energy. I wish I hadn't bothered even going in for that appointment. If I wanted a minimum wage job in an unrelated industry, I could have had one yesterday. If a recruiter can look at my (decades of) experience and come up with a minimum wage for someone my age, they are not doing their own job. Sorry. Would you recommend it for a former bank manager?
