Confessions of a lawyer

In a big downtown law firm we do make a lot of money, but we work very hard for it. For the most part it's rewarding, challenging work. But it really annoys me that just because we sell a service people think they are a better judge of the value of what we sell than the market. If we have other clients who will pay what we ask, that's what we are going to charge. Does anyone go to a baker and start bargaining on their prices, or ask to eat a few croissants for free before they order and pay for a dozen? If you don't like our fees go find some other way to solve your problem. Your problem. That you got yourself into.

You had me...until your "your problem that you got yourself into" comment.... I really doubt that everyone who requires legal help is the very cause of the problem!

working very hard? Helping mankind?

That might be in the eye of the beholder. Can you actually help people? You bill for every hour spent? As a professional myself I do not agree with your perspective. Look at things from your clients perspective and what you are truly contributing to the world.

Actually my lawyer is all about working on fair prices dependant on income. She is the best in B.C. and that is probably why. She is helping EVERYBODY out unlike your smug ass. The market in Vancouver is overvalued and overstaffed with people just like you. Yes the French bakery on main lets you sample before you buy.

My problem. ? Ya a wanted that car to run me over. My bad.
Vancouver!!!! Assholes who run the place and women who marry them.

And people often pay their lawyers last (after paying the plumber, the baker, the vet, etc.) because they assume that the lawyer is rich and doesn't need the money.

Can't tell you how many times I had clients who drove a better car than I did, or went on expensive vacations but weren't keen on paying my bill....

While I have no particular sympathy for the OP, it IS interesting how we all think we know what a good lawyer, doctor and teacher is.

I think we all think "My problem oughta be a piece of cake to solve" but we really have no idea how hard it is to get another person up to speed on our situation, solve it for us and do it in a way that exceeds all our expectations.

We should be over the moon every day people dressed in animal skins aren't beating us over the head with their clubs and stealing our turkey legs.

Objection!

One would expect a lawyer to be able to pull together a far more tactful and alluring argument that the trite you've just presented... basically, you're all cretins, and if you don't like our terms go fuck yourself.

Not how you go about winning people over mate.

Another Service Industry

I work for a busy downtown hotel. I also went to school and work very hard, and yet people just like you come in and "negotiate" all the time. You simply tell me that you want a lower price. Or in the case the something goes wrong with your stay, you refuse to pay and demand a rebate. So sorry if I don't want to pay you because you lost my case.

Same at my work

And it is very different from law. We provide a service & products that are not essential to human existence yet people constantly come in & ask for a discount. If you can afford what we are offering, go away...it's not something you need to survive...it's a bit of a luxury item. I get so annoyed & I try to patiently explain why they can't get is for 40% off...very frustrating!!! People want the best yet are too cheap to pay for it.

There's a difference between the rich and greedy (your clients apparently), and those of us who can't afford high legal fees. It's not that we don't want to pay, we just ain't got the money.
